Welcome to the

Swinburne's Family History Site

Origin of the Swinburne Name: Old English: habitational name from Swinburne in Northumberland, named from Old English swin ‘swine’, ‘wild boar’ + burna ‘stream’. Originating in Northumberland. The Swin Burn is a stream rising at Carrycoats Moor and flowing through the township of East or Little Swinburn.

My research started when one of my two Sister's sadly passed away in 2002, she left me all her paper research (from the days before online sources) about the main names in the family, Swinburne (Father), Cox (Mother), Colbran (Grandmother, Maternal), Blakey (Aunts Husband). Plus one or two others, my research has now grown to where I use Family Tree Maker and currently there are over 12,000 names, I also use this software for my Wife's Family Tree adding about another 6,000 names, to the research so about 18,000 - 20, names are in my sights!

Whilst doing this research, it has shown across the years that people love to add or remove letters form their names, which makes it very difficult to trace some people, an example is my own name, back in the day there has been Swinburne/Swinburn/Swimburne/Swinbourne etc.

Earlier this year, my surviving Sister and I took an Ancestry DNA test, these have helped find some family members, albeit distant cousins, some more distant that even I thought, this is a road not yet fully followed as due to the results, I am told of people who are related to me but I do not nor ever have had them in my tree, so research is required to connect the dots, but when it is done it does help to find people who you never realised are relatives.

Anyway, names associated with my name are (in case anyones interested):

Paternal Grandparents - Swinburne/Davison, Great Grandparents - Swinburne/Knight, Davison/Swinhoe (Swinney)

Maternal Grandparent - Cox/Colbran, Great Grandparents - Cox/Wood, Colbran/Cooper

My DNA results have shown that I am 83% English & Northern Europe, spread across South East England, Yorkshire and East Midlands and the East of England, now this matches up with most of my research, as these are areas where my family comes from, down to the fact that my family have had Mariners working Ships/Boats up and down the East Coast of England.

THIS WEBSITE IS CURRENTLY BEING RE-WRITTEN AND CHANGED SO MY APOLOGIES IF YOU HAVE FOUND THIS WEBSITE AND CANNOT FIND ANYTHING USEFUL, BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME, AS KEVIN COSTNER MIGHT SAY!
